The spikes were to deter pigeons from fouling a garden swing, which had become unusable. Since installing the spikes we can use the swing without having to resort to a bucket a mop every time! All we need now is some sunny weather!!

When it comes to complaints about our birdspikes they are honestly few and far between however one complaint we do get every so often is that the birds are still landing where the spikes are installed. This may be for a few reasons, firstly the customer may have used the wrong product so for example installed a Defender 4 bird spike on a 5 inch ledge. The Defender 4 spikes will only protect a depth of up to 4 inches therefore we could explain to the customer that they need to use a Defedner 8 to get the deeper ledge protection.

The other reason for the spikes not working could be because the customer has installed the Defender pigeon spikes onto an area and expects that they will protect against all birds. The Defender pigeon spikes will only protect areas from pigeons and like sized birds. For smaller birds we recommend the Defender Starling & Sparrow spikes and for larger birds like Seagulls we recommend the Defender Seagull spikes. A seagull could technically land where Defender pigeon spikes are installed, this is because the spike works by nudging into the birds breast and making it uncomfortable, the pigeon spikes are too short for the longer legged seagulls and therefore we created a product with a longer spike.

Lastly the other complaint we sometimes get is that a customer has installed Defender pigeon spikes onto a ledge where the pigeons were roosting and they have moved onto a different ledge or area. The only solution to this problem is to buy more spikes and hope the pigeons move to someone else's property (which is often the case) or spike all the areas of your property you do not wish the pigeons to land on in the first place.

Pigeon Spikes - hardly visible

There are some issues regarding the aesthetics of pigeon spikes. Close up they look like an upside down hair brush and users sometimes try other forms of bird deterrent products until they quickly realise that nothing works as quickly and as effective as pigeon spikes. When looking from ground level the spikes can hardly be seen and if the user maintains / cleans the spikes once a year they will be working for 10 - 15 years plus.

To stop Seagulls and Pigeons roosting on the ridge of a roof you have to fix a continous row of bird spikes ensuring no gaps or small holes are left. Killing birds does not solve the problem; it would not take long before another pair of birds moves in. Treating the cause of the problem, for example, installing bird spikes to ledges, guttering, window sills, rafters, beams etc will stop pigeons using your property making them unable to roost.

Poisons should never be used as non target species of birds and animals could be killed. Simply install the bird spikes and move the birds away from your property.

There are a number of bird scare products available on the UK market. Products like "terror eyes" or "bird of prey owls" have the aesthetic look over bird spikes but not the deterrent value that a customer should look for. In manys cases just installing the bird scare product will increase the deterrent affects, however, as soon as the installer has moved off site the problem birds will start to roost in the area. The birds will be aware of a new arrival but it won't take long before they realise that they offer no threat. Bird spikes offers a simple soultion, when installed on ledges, rafters, beams etc they act as a barrier to stop birds roosting, the birds simply move to another site. Always make sure when installing bird spikes you completely cover all the areas birds like to roost, this will ensure 100% deterrent proof.

How to get rid of pigeons on my TV aerial?

Yes, pigeon anti roosting spikes are ideal for this purpose. The spikes are best installed by using an plastic cable ties wrapped around the base of the spike and then around the aerial itself. This will ensure that the spike cannot slip around and end up facing downwards. You could also support the fixing with silicone adhesive as well as plastic cable ties. Although stainless steel spikes are unlikely to interfere with the TV signal when installed on an aerial it may be wise to consider a plastic spike for the purpose. It is important to make the distinction between anti-roosting products and bird exclusion products. The pigeon spike is a pure anti-roosting/perching product that is used almost exclusively to stop virtually any species of wild bird from landing on flat surfaces, although the product can also be used to block holes and can be installed vertically, horizontally and upside down in this application. Bird exclusion products such as nylon bird netting are normally installed to protect an area rather than a specific surface. The major difference between the two types of product, in real terms, is that the pigeon spike is relatively inexpensive to purchase, can be installed by the property owner and is completely reversible and non-invasive (in relation to the fabric of the building) to install; nylon bird netting, on the other hand, can be an expensive product to have installed and in a majority of cases it must be installed by a specialist contractor. Nylon bird netting is also highly invasive to install (in respect of the fabric of the building – it must be drilled and bolted in place) and, unlike pigeon spikes, is not reversible. In 99% of applications where nylon bird netting is recommended as a means of controlling pigeons, anti-roosting spikes can be used to much greater effect and at a significantly lower cost to the property owner.
