Bird Control testimonials

Peter Walker, Newcastle Upon Tyne

I recently purchased some pigeon spikes through the Jones and Son Pest Control Limited website http://www.birdspikesonline.co.uk/. They promptly handled my order which was delivered the next day. Included was a handy DVD giving instructions and tips on how to install the spikes.

The spikes were to deter pigeons from fouling a garden swing, which had become unusable. Since installing the spikes we can use the swing without having to resort to a bucket a mop every time! All we need now is some sunny weather!!

Pigeon Spike Testimonials

Sir

I wanted to write to thank you for the efficient service that I received following recent placement of a small order for pigeon spikes.

From simple browsing, I found your very informative website and conducted a very easy on-line transaction. Within only a day or two, I received my purchase, well packaged and with thoughtful supply of further information (and a spare copy for a neighbour!).

The product, although simple, was exactly what I was looking for to prevent pigeons from depositing droppings on a newly constructed wooden swing/slide/playcentre. It was easy to install and thus far has been very effective - no more daily cleaning the swing seats and slide!

It's not often but it's just great when something just works well. I'm really pleased not only with the quality of your product but also your great service.

Well done & many thanks,

Bird Spikes Online

Testimonials from customers happy to install pigeon spikes.

My package arrives this morning at 9.45 everything is great but I just wanted to say "thank you" because when I placed my order over the internet yesterday I made a mistake and forgot to add some other things.

My partner told me it would be no good speaking to you because you would tell me I could order the other things but I would have to pay post & packaging again he said, they will be no different to B&Q, Argos, Wickes, screw fix etc well he was wrong!!

I phoned you yesterday and you were very helpful and you let me order the extra things and told me you would put then with my original order at no extra cost.

It was really nice to deal with a company that put their customers first "very refreshing".

Many thanks Bird Spikes On Line

Pigeon Spikes - customer satisfaction

'Brian Shubrook ,Chigwell,Essex IG76NF'

Easy to fit and 100% effective in stopping the pigeons. We had new neighbours moving in recently ,who have been throwing bread onto the lawn for the birds.Unfortunately, they did not seem to realise that this only tends to attract pigeons, and we were inundated with a lot of pigeons congregating around both our house and next door, sitting on our top two windows, which have a small ledge protruding. We have a conservatory below and the consequential mess on the glass roof was awful. We ordered the spikes and since fitting,a simple job,the birds now sit permanently on next door`s window ledges! No more messy windows.........

Pigeon problems

'I’ve asked the Head of Customer Service ‘Emma Barltrop’ of Jones & Son what customers complain about with regards to bird spikes?'

When it comes to complaints about our birdspikes they are honestly few and far between however one complaint we do get every so often is that the birds are still landing where the spikes are installed. This may be for a few reasons, firstly the customer may have used the wrong product so for example installed a Defender 4 bird spike on a 5 inch ledge. The Defender 4 spikes will only protect a depth of up to 4 inches therefore we could explain to the customer that they need to use a Defedner 8 to get the deeper ledge protection.

The other reason for the spikes not working could be because the customer has installed the Defender pigeon spikes onto an area and expects that they will protect against all birds. The Defender pigeon spikes will only protect areas from pigeons and like sized birds. For smaller birds we recommend the Defender Starling & Sparrow spikes and for larger birds like Seagulls we recommend the Defender Seagull spikes. A seagull could technically land where Defender pigeon spikes are installed, this is because the spike works by nudging into the birds breast and making it uncomfortable, the pigeon spikes are too short for the longer legged seagulls and therefore we created a product with a longer spike.

Lastly the other complaint we sometimes get is that a customer has installed Defender pigeon spikes onto a ledge where the pigeons were roosting and they have moved onto a different ledge or area. The only solution to this problem is to buy more spikes and hope the pigeons move to someone else's property (which is often the case) or spike all the areas of your property you do not wish the pigeons to land on in the first place.

Do not feed the pigeons!

The feral pigeon is completely at home in urban environments, exploiting humans for food and using buildings for the purposes of roosting and breeding. Pigeons breed all year round with peak breeding periods in spring and summer, however, breeding is restricted if food is restricted. This offers a potential solution in controlling increasing numbers by reducing the supply of food to pigeons. All rubbish is bagged, food is swept from the roads, educated people in the problems caused by mass bird feeding and local councils take responsibility of the overall pigeon problem.

Pigeon Spikes - hardly visible

There are some issues regarding the aesthetics of pigeon spikes. Close up they look like an upside down hair brush and users sometimes try other forms of bird deterrent products until they quickly realise that nothing works as quickly and as effective as pigeon spikes. When looking from ground level the spikes can hardly be seen and if the user maintains / cleans the spikes once a year they will be working for 10 - 15 years plus.

Anti bird spikes

'Flat roof hell'

Seagulls and Pigeons love flat roof areas; they offer easy landing, a look out for dangerous predators and the opportunity to spot potential food sources. Once a flat roof is established the birds will start to walk, jump, hop, land and nest build making the noise levels unbearable. In some cases seagulls will start tearing up the tar, bitumen and felt lining protecting the flat roof.

Installing several rows of bird spikes across the flat roof area will ensure 100% total protection from the birds immediately.

Bird deterrent

'Seagulls and pigeons always perch on the highest point of a roof'.
To stop Seagulls and Pigeons roosting on the ridge of a roof you have to fix a continous row of bird spikes ensuring no gaps or small holes are left. Seagulls will try and land between the spikes however they are restricted in their movement and will move to another location giving them freedom to roam.

'Product reviews for Pigeon Control. '

More and more technical products come to market to battle the humble feral pigeon. New products like bird scarers, electric shock tracks, ultrasonic & audible devices and products affecting the birds nervous system have launched with little success while the tried and tested pigeon spike remains the number one bird control product. Although the pigeon spike cannot be used in open areas like fields or open spaces they are simply the best product around your property that work immediately when installed for ledges, rafters, beams, window sills, railings, TV aerials, gutters, pipe work etc.

The Pigeon Control Resource Centre has a product review on all products used in the pigeon control industry.

Trapping and removing pigeons.

'Trapping pigeons versus bird of prey deterrent'.

Trapping & removing may seem like a solution to your problem and many companies enlist a Pest Control firm to regularly monitor traps, however, the situation becomes a continuous cycle as new pigeons fill the void left from ones already trapped and removed.

Solution:

Change trap & remove practise to real time flight operations. Enlist the Pest Control Companies to fly birds of prey over the problem areas, this will reduce the number of pigeons and eventually clear the area. You still need to fly the birds to control the area however the flights can be less frequent over time.

Pigeon Control Solutions

' Can I kill pigeons or poison them?'

Killing birds does not solve the problem; it would not take long before another pair of birds moves in. Treating the cause of the problem, for example, installing bird spikes to ledges, guttering, window sills, rafters, beams etc will stop pigeons using your property making them unable to roost.

Poisons should never be used as non target species of birds and animals could be killed. Simply install the bird spikes and move the birds away from your property.

Do bird scare products really work?

'as soon as the installer has moved off site the problem birds will start to roost in the area'
There are a number of bird scare products available on the UK market. Products like "terror eyes" or "bird of prey owls" have the aesthetic look over bird spikes but not the deterrent value that a customer should look for. In manys cases just installing the bird scare product will increase the deterrent affects, however, as soon as the installer has moved off site the problem birds will start to roost in the area. The birds will be aware of a new arrival but it won't take long before they realise that they offer no threat. Bird spikes offers a simple soultion, when installed on ledges, rafters, beams etc they act as a barrier to stop birds roosting, the birds simply move to another site. Always make sure when installing bird spikes you completely cover all the areas birds like to roost, this will ensure 100% deterrent proof.

How to get rid of pigeons on my TV aerial?

'I have pigeons roosting on my TV aerial – can I use anti roosting spikes'?
Yes, pigeon anti roosting spikes are ideal for this purpose. The spikes are best installed by using an plastic cable ties wrapped around the base of the spike and then around the aerial itself. This will ensure that the spike cannot slip around and end up facing downwards. You could also support the fixing with silicone adhesive as well as plastic cable ties. Although stainless steel spikes are unlikely to interfere with the TV signal when installed on an aerial it may be wise to consider a plastic spike for the purpose. One UK manufacturer of pigeon spikes - Jones and Son Ltd offer an ingenious kit to protect TV aerials which includes all the different fixtures and fittings that will be required to protect virtually any type of TV aerial.

Anti Roosting Spikes versus Bird Netting

'The Pigeon Spike is a pure anti-roosting/perching product'
It is important to make the distinction between anti-roosting products and bird exclusion products. The pigeon spike is a pure anti-roosting/perching product that is used almost exclusively to stop virtually any species of wild bird from landing on flat surfaces, although the product can also be used to block holes and can be installed vertically, horizontally and upside down in this application. Bird exclusion products such as nylon bird netting are normally installed to protect an area rather than a specific surface. The major difference between the two types of product, in real terms, is that the pigeon spike is relatively inexpensive to purchase, can be installed by the property owner and is completely reversible and non-invasive (in relation to the fabric of the building) to install; nylon bird netting, on the other hand, can be an expensive product to have installed and in a majority of cases it must be installed by a specialist contractor. Nylon bird netting is also highly invasive to install (in respect of the fabric of the building – it must be drilled and bolted in place) and, unlike pigeon spikes, is not reversible. In 99% of applications where nylon bird netting is recommended as a means of controlling pigeons, anti-roosting spikes can be used to much greater effect and at a significantly lower cost to the property owner.

Bird Spikes

'Bird spikes are almost invisible once installed'

Bird spikes are used throughout every town or city centre worldwide and can be seen installed on a huge variety of surfaces as a means of deterring almost every species of wild bird, although they are most commonly installed on buildings for the purpose of Pigeon control. Bird spikes are almost invisible once installed and therefore can be used to protect buildings where aesthetics are the greatest consideration, providing the property owner with a neat, effective and low-visibility control. Other examples of where the Bird spike can be used to great effect are lamp posts, flat surfaces of any description, gutters, louvers, roofs, pipes, statues, cabling, awnings, aerials, chimneys, eaves, architectural features of virtually any description, glass canopies, I-beams, air conditioning housings, railings, flat roofs, boats, shop signs and even trees - the range of applications for the product is endless including CCTV and security cameras.

Pigeon Spikes

'Pigeon spikes are renowned for their versatility in terms of application'

Anti-roosting pigeon spikes are considered to be the most efficient and the most cost-effective pigeon exclusion device available within the pest control marketplace. Most independent experts believe that pigeon spikes are the only anti-roosting product (or exclusion device) that can be considered to be 100% effective, providing that they are installed as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. Pigeon spikes are renowned for their versatility in terms of application, longevity and the ease of installation, making them the best-selling anti-roosting product available. Probably their greatest benefit to the property owner is the fact that the product is not only extremely quick and easy to install but they can be installed by virtually anyone, negating the need to instruct a specialist contractor and thereby further reducing the cost and complexity of the installation.

How To Control Pigeon Numbers In Towns And Cities.

'Dovecotes are the way forward however you need to set aside an annual budget for the general dovecote maintenance and care of the pigeons for this long term project'

The need to control feral pigeon populations in urban areas has been the subject of intense debate for decades with town and city councils making little impact on the problem due to lack of investment and, in many cases, a reluctance to think laterally. Although the feral pigeon has been a common feature of urban life for the last 100 years there is no doubt that urban flocks are now growing faster than their numbers can be controlled. The reason for this unprecedented rise in feral pigeon numbers is due, almost exclusively, to the availability of food and the methods used to control the birds. Other factors such as the availability of good roosting and breeding facilities also play their part.

The feral pigeon is completely at home in urban environments, exploiting humans for food and using buildings for the purposes of roosting and breeding. This is because the feral pigeon is a descendent of the rock dove, a cliff-dwelling bird that was commonly found feeding and breeding along rocky coastlines prior to its mass exodus inland to make its home alongside man. The only proven method of reducing pigeon flock size as part of an area-wide control system is to use artificial breeding facilities. This stand-alone method of control has been scientifically proven to reduce pigeon flock size and is currently being employed throughout mainland Europe by councils and commercial organisations alike. The principle of a scheme using artificial breeding facilities is to provide a pigeon loft or dovecote in which feral pigeons can be encouraged to roost and breed and from which their eggs can be removed as laid and replaced with dummy eggs. This method of breeding control has been found to be extremely effective in reducing flock size and maintaining that reduction indefinitely.

Other pigeon control products are available, although deterrents cannot be considered to be cheap, if the correct choice is made and if the product is sourced and installed by the property owner concerned at least 20-30 years’ protection should be afforded. The correct choice of deterrents is key, with some anti-perching products such as repellent gel only providing between 3 and 12 months’ protection and bird exclusion products like nylon bird netting only offering 5-10 years’ protection. The anti-roosting spike will, however, offer the property owner up to 30 years’ protection without the need to maintain or replace the product, making it an economical and aesthetically pleasing choice.

The above information is taken from the following article supplied by the Pigeon Control Resource Centre.

Bird Spike Quality and Building Aesthetics

'Bird spike customers need to understand the long term dangers of inferior products!'

Quality in bird spikes is paramount to the ongoing success of town high streets, shopping centres and building aesthetics, as cheaper overseas products come onto the UK market. Although they offer value for money the long term damage of brown staining to buildings from rusting wires can be costly. The Defender stainless steel bird spike range manufactured by Jones & Son Pest Control Supplies Ltd in the UK use 304 grade stainless steel with 8% nickel content ensuring a rust free product. An cheaper alternative to stainless steel is the plastic bird spike made from 100% UV polycarbonate, these can be used in exactly the same installations as the steel spikes.

Pigeon Spikes to stop birds roosting on your property.

Pigeon spikes are completely humane and non-lethal, unlike many of its counterparts. Internationally renowned bird protection agencies, such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), recommend pigeon spikes, confirming their place as the most effective and the most humane anti-roosting product available. Although pigeon spikes may appear to be able to inflict harm on any bird that comes into contact with them, the chance of a bird injuring itself is virtually zero. This is because most birds that occupy urban areas, where the pigeon spike is most commonly used, are intelligent and well versed in avoiding dangers such as roads, overhead cables, etc., and will not attempt to land on an area protected with pigeon spikes. It is virtually unheard of for a pigeon to harm itself on anti-roosting spikes and therefore the product can be used with a clear conscience by property owners experiencing pigeon-related problems. Products such as nylon bird netting, another commonly used deterrent against pigeons, has a poor track record in this respect, with vast numbers of pigeons dying each year having become trapped behind or within poor netting installations.

Hero or Villain

It has taken less than a century for people to change their minds from supporting the feral pigeon to vilifying it for the mess they make.

Hero:
In modern times the feral pigeon has been used to great effect during wartime. In both the first and second World Wars the pigeon played a vital role in intelligence gathering saving hundreds of thousands of human lives by carrying messages across enemy lines. Pigeons were carried on ships in convoys and in the event of a U-boat attack a messenger pigeon was released with details of the location of the sinking ship. In many cases this lead to the survivors being rescued and lives saved.

Villain:
Today many Town & City businesses deal with an ongoing battle against bird droppings, nesting materials and pigeon control.

Pigeon spikes are used throughout every town or city centre worldwide and can be seen installed on a huge variety of surfaces as a means of deterring almost every species of wild bird, although they are most commonly installed on buildings for the purpose of pigeon control. Pigeon spikes are almost invisible once installed and therefore can be used to protect buildings where aesthetics are the greatest consideration, providing the property owner with a neat, effective and low-visibility control.
